Abstract

Movable or immovable cultural heritage is composed by matter, which is susceptible to degradation processes. These processes lead to material and immaterial losses and they are generally related to chemical reactions or physical processes, associated or not with the presence of microorganisms. They depend, in addition to the object’s chemical composition and physical structure, on their environmental and/or microenvironmental characteristics. Considering this, in the context of the seminar “Conservation science and the use of chemical, physical and biological characterization techniques for cultural heritage”, and using two case studies, this work aimed at discussing how characterization techniques can be used to evaluate the impact of microenvironmental composition on cultural heritage, and how this evaluation can be used for its better preservation.
