Abstract

The present paper aims to reflect on the subject of environmental characterisation as an indispensable tool for the preventive conservation of tangible cultural heritage, taking into account the role of academy in the process of introduction or consolidation of such practices in institutions devoted to the preservation of collections. In particular, exemplary experiences arisen within the University of São Paulo (Brazil) will be presented. These encompass cases of research and development of innovative solutions as well as actions directed to the training of conservators and the dissemination of technical scientific knowledge.
