Abstract

Based on documents preserved at the Public and Historical Archive of Ribeirão Preto, and on questions and interviews that was realized in two libraries of public use in the same town, this work discusses in which measure the Monument to the Constitutionalist Soldier is perceived by the common sense in its monumental function, therefore memorial. This way the work discusses, based on the ethymological definition of monument, what is the meaning that this work acquires in official representation and in the daily interpretation made by the population that can resignify it.
