Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of the formal diachronical transformations of historical terraced houses façades in Recife, Brazil. The central core of the investigation is the development of a descriptive and analytic procedure based on the plan façade, surfaces and lines of composition, and voids. A set composed of 53 buildings altered between 1959 and 1970 was compared to the XIX Century compositional principles expressed by municipal regulations and classified according to their degree of modification. It is believed that this analytical procedure may support historical investigations, conservation strategies and restoration projects.
