Cultural heritage and social memory in the sland of Mozambique

We discuss implications in the cultural heritage of the island of Mozambique, with particular attention to the contradictions generated by the delimitation of its ideological, symbolic and affective fields, as well as the distance between this heritage’s representations for technical segments and the island’s population. The article analyzes memory and heritage while presenting interviews with inhabitants of the island. Through the results, it was possible to realize that the protection of the island’s heritage and memory faces immense difficulties – institutional (including bringing local and international plans together), economic and cultural – and is very distant from the legitimate needs and concerns of local population. If that does not change, it will eventually compromise the tangible and intangible heritage of all those who share the island.
