Abstract

This essay discusses the Guiana Shield as natural heritage to be preserved in a process driven by international cooperation between Brazil, Colombia, the French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela to protect a transboundary asset. Being theoretical work, the idea of preservation of this asset permeates three central categories: patrimonialization, biodiversity and territory. Among other possibilities, there is a proposed action in this direction: the creation of Conservation Units (CU) for inclusion in the World Heritage List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In that sense, through national and international actions, it is understood that countries need to invest in training human resources, in scientific research, laws, and information and communication technology to expand protection areas in the Guiana Shield.
