Abstract

This paper analyses the actions and conflicts of several social agents, including the different values ascribed to the former industrial complex of the Indústrias Reunidas Franscisco Matarazzo (IRFM) at the Água Branca neighborhood, in the city of São Paulo. It also investigates the justifications and interests that endorsed the Heritage Listing Process of this industrial complex (which started in 1985). Incoherencies and overlapping of the many different speeches are noted, as well as the changes through time on the values ascribed to the very same object. Finally, it realizes the importance of the exchange between heritage preservation and urban development actions in contemporary cities.
