Abstract

At the end of the 19th century, Brazil was emerging as a young, independent nation, striving to assert its identity and consolidate modernization projects. In this context, Portuguese intellectuals such as Eça de Queirós (1845–1900) and Jaime Batalha Reis (1847–1935) turned their attention to the country, producing analyses that combined fascination and criticism. This transatlantic dialogue reveals not only the concerns of the Generation of 1870 writers regarding the course of civilization but also their perception of Brazil as a space of possibilities and challenges. By exploring this intellectual exchange, grounded in the works A Emigração como Força Civilizadora (1893) by Eça de Queirós and O Descobrimento do Brasil Intelectual pelos Portugueses do Século XX (1924) by Jaime Batalha Reis, the present study examines how both authors engaged in the debate on Brazil’s development. Their discourse at times reaffirmed historical ties, while at other times proposed paths for modernization that diverged from the Portuguese model, highlighting the intersections between literature, diplomacy, and political thought in the 19th century. This approach aims to provide a broader understanding of Portugal-Brazil relations during a period of global transformations. Considering the social, cultural, and political concerns shared by both intellectuals, this study investigates how their ideas contributed to an intellectual revolution that crossed the Atlantic, connecting Portugal and Brazil. It underscores the uniqueness of Geração de 70, whose worldview continues to inspire debates on modernity and cultural identity.
