Abstract

José Saramago’s first works, written by late 1940’s, reveal a young writer searching for a way of expression. After the novel "Terra do Pecado", two short stories were published in magazines, showing some characteristics that will unfold in his consecrated novels. Although these narrators and characters are not so deeply constructed, elements such as the restlessness towards the lack of something or the need to act to revert this absence are suggested in these texts and help to have a wider view of Saramago’s literature.
