Abstract

Even appearing in many works of Eça de Queirós, as some short stories of Prosas bárbaras (written between 1866 and 1867), O mandarim (1880), A relíquia (1887) and Vidas dos santos (1891 – 1897), the devil is a constant character, but not so much analyzed in Eça de Queirós production. In this project we will look at one of those images of the "fallen angel", the role of devil in an extract of the second chapter of A relíquia. We intend to show that more than a mere secondary character, Satan is an important support for Eça de Queirós’ criticism of the Church and the religious institution. This small act of the devil in A relíquia can be understood as a representation of the meaning that the devil will also have in other Eça’s fictions in which he figures.
