Abstract

The present study analyses the opposite relationships between the city and the sea in the poem Marinheiro sem Mar, by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen. The concept described by Octavio Paz as the “contraries reconciliation” supports this analysis in two aspects: the duality represented by the poetic images and the rhythm instability and alternateness. Together, these two characteristics confirm that these oppositive spaces (sea and city) are interdependent. In the poem, the rhythm instability anticipates the tension in the sailor’s life. The poetic images, which most of the time present multiple ideas and antagonistic meanings, reveal a contradictory character that prefers the instability of the sea rather than stability represented by the city.
