Abstract

The article tries to show that beyond the two strands of the current commentary on Leonardo Bruni's work (its distance from historical truth or its purely rhetorical and instrumental character put at the service of the politico-economic interests of the Florentine oligarchy), it is also necessary to consider its function and politico-ideological performance, whether in relation to the public of his city, or in relation to the ideas, values and ideals assumed by our political modernity. Notwithstanding his deep roots in the republican tradition coming from Antiquity - notably drawn from Cicero and Aristotle - his work marks the birth of modern republicanism, interested above all in the participatory and egalitarian political-institutional forms of democratic societies.
