Abstract

This paper aims to analyse Joseph von Eichenorff’s poem Sehnsucht with the help of studies on melancholy ranging from Hippocrates to Klibansky, Panofsky & Saxl’s Saturn and Melancholy. It will be shown that the author’s dialogue with this long tradition can be notice through the images of contemplation and loss.
