Abstract

The paper answers two questions: which is Montaigne’s understanding of experience? How he builds his science of oneself on experience? There are many kinds of experience and one must understand how this science is built on each of them. One learns from the collective experience of juridical practice by counterexample; the internal experience the mind has of itself teaches by example in reverse; and the rules for bodily health are learned from the example of pure experience.
