The article examines the dramatic plot of Diderot’s Le fils naturel in order to show how moral ideas of virtue and vice arise from the interaction of characters who represent psychological types but are driven by desires of a physiological nature. These desires ultimately determine actions and allow them to be judged according to socially established parameters. Of particular interest is the characterization of the central character, Dorval, as a rational economic agent who, paradoxically, proves incapable of acting in the pursuit of his own interests.
