Abstract

As a tool of proof and a tool of government, statistics played fundamental roles in the development of science, in the modes of action of the State, and in various branches of the economy. The development of digital technologies in the 21st century led to an increasing production of data and the emergence of a new algorithmic field of knowledge and action. Through empirical research grounded by theoretical contributions from the sociology of quantification and Science and Technology Studies, this paper analyzes some changes in public statistics produced by the National Statistical Offices. This is based on an investigation of the recent promotion of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence for official statistics in the context of the United Nations.
