Abstract

The article examines contemporary challenges to democracy through a historical lens, focusing on issues such as declining trust in political institutions and the rise of populist movements. These phenomena challenge democracy as a normative ideal, an institutional framework, and a set of established procedures. While acknowledging significant contemporary impasses, the article avoids both fatalistic and overly optimistic interpretations. Instead, it argues that the inherently expansive nature of democracy, though insufficient on its own to ensure its survival, offers a foundation for crafting political strategies that leverage human and technological resources. These strategies can foster innovative approaches to advancing justice, inclusion, and participation - key elements that sustain democratic coexistence.
