Abstract

ECONOMIC growth and income distribution are basic themes on economic theories and economic analysis of the development process in Brazil, a country with a particularly high-income inequality. The controversy about income distribution in Brazil became notorious in 1972, after the publication of 1970 Demographic Census results. Today, it seems that there is a consensus about the need to reduce inequality, but every practical measure towards this objective arouses controversy.
