Abstract

This article aims to present the relevance of Hans Jonas’ thought through the three axes that characterize his philosophical concerns: gnosis, life, and the relationship between technology and ethics. It begins by revisiting Jonas’ ideas within the context of the 20th century and his biographical and philosophical connections to the major events of that time, particularly concerning the nihilistic crisis and the advancement of technological powers. Subsequently, it analyzes the early exploration of gnosis, influenced by Heidegger, and the growing interest in life, which led Jonas to formulate a philosophical biology, serving as a critical complement to insufficient and reductionist interpretations of scientific biology. Finally, it shows how technology emerges as a central issue in Jonas’ work, leading the philosopher to propose an ethics based on the principle of responsibility. These elements underscore the significance of Jonas’ thought and its applicability in addressing contemporary issues, even 120 years after his birth.
