This article analyses the implications for agricultural growth and for the formulation of agricultural as well as agrarian policies, of the current macroeconomic strategy of Brazil, especially with Piano Real. The main focus is on the effects ofthe drastic valorization of the exchange rate, which occurred all over the decade. The article analyses first the evidence about the negative effects of the exchange rate valorization on agricultural prices and revenues. Next, it considers the effects on production, employment and agroindustrial imports. Finnally, in the absence of exchange devaluation, attention is given to compensatory measures in terms of the sector's profitability.
