This text is a preliminary présentation of the way in which the European missionaries in the 16th and 17th centuries,described the varieties of the Japanese language. As analysis material,I focused on the linguistic publication of the Japanese Jesuit press and I examined the descriptions of the dialectical and socioletal varieties,these composed by the so-called %gente baixa’ (low people) and the female gender-specmc language.Downloads
