Abstract

This article aims to map the differences and transformations that marks the path of the leibnizian concept of substance (and therefore his metaphysics) along the almost thirty years that separate his early and late systematic-like metaphysical synthesis; a pathway that goes from the 1986 Discourse on Metaphysics to the 1714 Monadology and Principles of Nature and Grace. Thus, we shall provide a framework of conceptual and theoretical mechanisms that will allow us a better understanding of the cohesive status of Leibniz’s philosophical work, from what we shall find a quite broad but singular notion of substance that is mainly defined by the reversible articulation between unity and action.
