Abstract

Spinoza’s conception of the relationship between the body and the mind is often presented as a model and reference in contemporary biology and neurobiology, as evidenced by the works of Jean-Pierre Changeux, Antonio Damasio, and Henri Atlan. Despite their profound differences, these researchers similarly emphasize three theses that position Spinoza as a precursor: psychophysical monism, the duality of expression of the body/mind unity, and the absence of interaction and reciprocal causation. This article examines the reasons why Spinoza is invoked by these researchers to support their theories and explores the various ways in which they use his conception of the body/mind relationship. The goal is to scrutinize how they successively engage with these three theses and to assess the relevance of their approach.
