Focus and Scope

Estudos Semióticos is an online and peer-reviewed journal devoted to the broad field of Semiotics. It aims to provide quality analyses and theoretical reflections on language in order to promote scientific and institutional development of the different methodological trends studying text, discourse, signs, especially those under current semiotic theories. All branches of semiotic research, as well as related fields, are welcome.
Established in 2005, Estudos Semióticos publishes three issues per year.
The journal receives original articles, book reviews, and interviews written in Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian or English in continuous flow, provided that they follow the guidelines set out by the journal’s Author Guidelines. Based on the process of assessment of papers, the Editorial Committee reserves the right to publish approved works in the issue being prepared for publication.
The journal has been ranked category A3 (2020) in the Qualis system (Brazilian official journal ranking system) from CAPES (the Brazilian Federal Agency for the Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education) and is indexed by DOAJ, Dialnet, EBSCO Essentials, ERIH Plus and OpenAIRE among several others.

Peer Review Process

Research Articles and Book Reviews are subject to double-blind peer review. Manuscripts first undergo an assessment by the editors for compliance and suitability. If a manuscript is deemed suitable for peer review, potential Reviewers are invited by the Editors or Associate Editors. Two potential Reviewers (members of the Editorial Team/Board or ad hoc) are first sent an invitation to review which includes the abstract of the manuscript and the Guidelines to Reviewers. Only once an invitation to review is accepted, is access to the manuscript provided.
When both reviews are positive, the author is informed that his/her paper is going to be published, and in case there are suggestions about changes in the manuscript, they are also going to be sent to the author. When one review is positive and the other is negative, the text is sent to a third referee that is going to decide for the publication or not of the submitted paper. During the whole process the anonymity of the authors of submitted papers is assured, in order that the assessments do not experience any kind of external influence. The Editors always have the final decision on a submitted manuscript.

Publication Frequency

Periodicity of Publication: triannual (three issues per year - April, August and December).
