The notion of form of life was introduced by Greimas in the field of semiotics exactly 30 years ago. Since then, the concept has become an essential component of the semiotic organon, but its meaning has remained equivocal, even though proposals for definitions have developed over the decades (Fontanille, 1993; 2008; 2015; Perusset, 2020). This paper aims to offer a broad synthesis of these explanatory works, with the ambition of making the notion as clear and operational as possible for renewed semiotic studies in humanities and social sciences. In this respect, this article also aims to confront the concept of forms of life with other related notions such as those of semiosphere (Lotman, 1966), lifestyle (Landowski, 1997; 2004) and ideal of life (Perusset, 2020).
