Abstract

This text addresses the problem of metalanguage used in the analysis of the expression plane of the sung lyrics. The Greimasian point of view on the text creates an object – the generative process –, in which the expression plane is not included. Consequently, semiotics was not concerned with the development of a technical language focused on the analysis of the expression plane. However, just as the content plane can and should be analyzed independently of the expression plane, this too can and should be analyzed independently of the content plane. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to set up a metalanguage whose object is the expression plane. This metalanguage must be anchored in the epistemological principles of structuralism and, at the same time, it must be able to mirror the constraints that the substance of the expression presents. Focusing on the musical expression plane, we discuss what are the desirable characteristics of this metalanguage and show why it should be founded on mathematics.
