Method, modelization and semiotics as human science

Abstract

he article attempts a critical review of the semiotic structural method designed for the analysis of cultural systems from the perspective of its complexity. It starts with considering the concept of text as a model and the modeling process as a structural analytic method. The central hypothesis distinguishes structural method and model and understands description and cognitive synthesis as fundamental processes in the semiotic studies of culture. According to Uspensky and Lótman, 20th Century science, in embracing new discoveries, had to face language, the expansion of both its sign systems and the processes of meaning making. Scientific research is expected to engage in the expansion of an “awareness of awareness” movement, in order to take admit the transformations which constitute the semiotics of cultural texts. This way, it situates semiotics and its role in the humanities.
