Abstract

This paper discusses the concept of heritability, used by behaviour genetics, molecular genetics, and the theory of heritability from the perspective of Larry Laudan’s reticulated model of scientific rationality. It analyzes the arguments against using the term heritability, focusing mainly on the results of behavioural genetics experiments. It leads to the conclusion that some criticisms of the term heritability are valid, as the term can be confusing to the general public, but they can be extreme, such as those that propose its extinction. The analysis developed leads to the conclusion that heritability, both through behavioural and molecular genetics, is helpful for their purposes. The authors consider that instead of being extinguished, we can use it considering more analyses, results and conclusions, which is the most rational and progressive choice.
