Although Hegel is a prominent figure in his writings, Honneth has shown adherence to Neuhouser's interpretation which selects Jean-Jacques Rousseau, with his concept of amour propre, as a precursor to the theory of recognition. Therefore, the aim of this article is to explore the potential reflections and implications of Rousseau's political philosophy in Honneth's theory of justice, specifically in the central concept of social freedom in the work The Freedom’s Right. It is concluded that in diagnosing social contradictions Honneth implicitly inherits the duality of Rousseau's amour propre.
