In Critique, Norm, and Utopia, Benhabib reconstructs central points in the works of Hegel, Marx, Adorno and Horkheimer to criticize the conception of the subject that would have been maintained over time in the tradition of critical theory. The intention of this article is to present the critique of the “philosophy of the subject”, going through the overcoming of several of these problems with the “Habermasian turn”, seeking to show, finally, how Benhabib considers that these transformations gave a democratic meaning to the emancipatory ideals of the tradition.
