Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, meaning of life, philosophical pessimism, nihilismAbstract
This is the first of two papers that aim to discuss the problem of the meaning of life in 19th century German philosophy, in order to open a dialogue with important discussions of contemporary philosophy. For this purpose, in this paper, the historical-philosophically problem is located (1); then, it investigates to what extent it is closely related, in the thoughts of Schopenhauer (2) and Nietzsche (3), to the themes of philosophical pessimism and nihilism; finally, it conclusively indicates the importance of both authors in establishing the problem in the philosophical tradition (4).
