THIS PAPER AIMS AT PRESENTING, IN ITS GENERAL LINES, THE THOUGHT OF PHILIPP MAINLÄNDER (1841-1876), TODAY A COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN PHILOSOPHER, BUT WHO WAS READ BY AUTHORS LIKE NIETZSCHE, BORGES AND CIORAN, AND WHO THE HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY KNOWS ONLY AS A DEFENDER AND PRACTITIONER OF SUICIDE. THE ARTICLE TRIES TO SHOW THE STRANGE INTENTION OF MAINLÄNDER TO CONCILIATE THE MOST EXTREME METAPHYSICAL PESSIMISM WITH A SOCIALIST POLITICAL THOUGHT.
