THIS ARTICLE FIRSTLY PRESENTS THE MEANINGS OF “MEDIEVAL INTELLECTUAL” COINED BY JACQUES LE GOFF IN INTELLECTUALS IN THE MIDDLE AGES (1957) AND BY ALAIN DE LIBERA IN THINKING IN THE MIDDLE AGES (1991). IN A SECOND STEP WE TRY, BY MEANS OF A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE PLACES RESERVED BY LE GOFF AND BY DE LIBERA FOR THE WORK OF THE GERMAN DOMINICAN MEISTER ECKHART (†1328), TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE THEORETICAL LIMITS OF THEIRS INVESTIGATIONS AS WELL AS TO THE EXPLANATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ECKHART’S THOUGHT AND THE NOTIONS OF “MYSTICISM” AND “ETHICAL ARISTOTELISM”.
