Voiceless variants of the coronal /s/ in barrodurense speech: an analysis of linguistic conditioners

This article investigates the palatalization of /S/ in coda position, offering a sociolinguistic analysis of the phenomenon. This study is grounded in Variation Theory, drawing primarily on Labov (1972), Weinreich, Labov and Herzog (2006), and Mollica (2021). Phonological description of the relevant variants follows Autosegmental Phonology with an emphasis on Feature Geometry (Clements; Hume 1995), while the treatment of /S/ palatalization is informed by Brescancini (1996), Scherre and Macedo (2000), Hora (2016), Lima (2017), and Cunha and Sales (2020). The corpus comprises 1,118 tokens of the variants [s] and [ʃ], gathered through recorded individual interviews and a word-list reading task with 16 participants. Data were statistically analyzed using ‘GoldVarb X’. Results indicate
that palatalization of /S/ is chiefly conditioned by a following coronal /t/. Other factors also reached statistical significance—medial coda, disyllabic words, pretonic
position, labial vowels, and dorsal vowels—although their apparent effects seem to stem from interference by the aforementioned following context.
