Brazilian grammars of the second half of the 20th century and their horizons of retrospection: the question of pleonasm

In this text, drawing on the articulation between the History of Linguistic Ideas and Discourse Analysis, we analyze the ‘Moderna Gramática Portuguesa’ by Evanildo Bechara (1961) and the ‘Nova Gramática do Português Contemporâneo’ by Celso Cunha and Lindley Cintra (1985). Grammar is understood here as a linguistic instrument resulting from a process of grammatization (Auroux, 1992), which both prescribes and instrumentalizes the language. Based on the periodization of Brazilian grammatization by Guimarães (1996), our research coincides with the fourth period, characterized by the inclusion of Linguistics in the mandatory
curriculum of Letters degrees and the creation of the first graduate programs in the field. The objective is to analyze the notion of pleonasm in these grammars and the examples associated with it. As a notion that generated divergence among grammarians of different periods, it provides a fertile ground to investigate concept of horizon of retrospection (Auroux, 1992) which posits that one knowledge is affiliated with another, the proximities, departures, and theoretical affiliations of these grammarians regarding the concept of pleonasmo.
