Remarks on light verbs: the properties of constructions with the verb ‘bater’

This paper investigates the shared properties of light verbs (LVs) and the contexts in which they occur, focusing in particular on constructions involving the verb bater in order to determine whether it can also be classified as a light verb. To this end, we engage with the specialized literature (Pederneira, 2014; Scher, 2004, 2006; Alves, 2016, 2022; Kearns, 1998, 2002) and compare the properties attributed to LVs with selected data involving ‘bater’. This study is grounded in the generative framework of Distributed Morphology (DM), with special emphasis on List 3 (the Encyclopedia), under the hypothesis that this component may shed light on the functioning of light verbs, since it is responsible for assigning special interpretations to roots in specific structural contexts. The results indicate that ‘bater’ can be considered a light verb, as it exhibits the properties described in the literature for this class. Furthermore, the analysis suggests that List 3 not only accounts for the behavior of light verbs but also allows for a principled distinction between light verb constructions and idiomatic expressions, based on the role of structural context and the principle of compositionality.
