Abstract

This paper discusses the nature of the ‘Obra Nova de Lingoa Geral de Mina’ (1741), a document of an African language spoken in Brazil during 18th century, written by the Portuguese António da Costa Peixoto. We aim to understand its contribution to the the historical knowledge of Gbe languages. Thus, based on Auroux’s (1992) proposal on the genesis of linguistic knowledge, in the theorists in the field of Folk Linguistics (Paveau, 2018; Gonçalves, 2021), as well as on the analysis of some grammatical features of the language, we consider ‘Obra Nova’ (1741) an example of epilinguistic-metalinguistic continuum. We argue that the document emerges from the interactions between the author and the enslaved Africans as well as from his translation practices. In our point of view, those translations show that Costa Peixoto has known the grammar of that African language spoken in Brazil. In this sense, we disagree with Lopes’ (1945) and Bonvini’s (2008) approaches, which analyse the ‘Obra Nova’ (1741) as a failed metalinguistic document. We claim that those accounts led to misinterpretations of the insights that the document can offer to linguistic description and analyses. Moreover, it led to exceptionalist statements (DeGraff, 2003).
