Toponyms reflect cultural references, historical processes, and power disputes. In this sense, this article presents an overview of indigenous toponymy in the municipalities of the state of São Paulo, interpreting the historical and political processes involved in place naming as a means to contribute to the recognition of its historical, territorial, and cultural relevance. The methodology adopted a historical-geographic and ninterdisciplinary approach, grounded in Cultural Geography. The systematic survey of indigenous toponyms was conducted based on Navarro (2021), classifying them according to their linguistic origins and historical periods of naming. Spatialization was carried out using QGIS 3.28 software. The resulting cartography allowed for nthe identification of spatial patterns and a critical reflection on processes of territorial occupation, as well as on the symbolic disputes involved in the historical and territorial construction of the state of São Paulo. The results provide an unprecedented basis for analyzing the indigenous presence in landscapes and pave the way for future research with linguistic, educational, and decolonial approaches.
