Xenophobia, estrangement and ideology: elements for an analysis of xenophobia in capitalism

The purpose of this article is to bring briefly considerations about xenophobia in the capitalist sociability, especially in pointing out the mediations that are established between the categories of estrangement/alienation, reification, fetishism and xenophobia, and how these processes, promoted by the logic of value, create conditions for xenophobia, the aversion towards foreigners, and for the creation of a xenophobic social consciousness, as well as highlighting how bourgeois nationalist ideology works to instill in men the feeling of aversion towards foreigners. The article begins by pointing out how the phenomenon of estrangement/alienation is historically configured in capitalist sociability – based on the exploitation of estranged/alienated labor – in the form of fetishism and reification and paves the way for xenophobia. It then analyzes how bourgeois nationalist ideology emerges and how it contributes to the reproduction of xenophobic prejudice.
