Survey of BIM objects provided by the construction materials manufacturers in Brazil

The growing engagement of architecture and engineering professionals and construction companies on the process of BIM (Building Information Modeling) adoption and dissemination has been the focus of several studies. On the other hand, little attention has been paid to the companies upstream of the complex construction chain: the building materials industry. This paper aims to evaluate the BIM objects provided by the construction materials manufacturers, which allows us to assess the industry degree of maturity in terms of BIM adoption. We present here a survey of the BIM object libraries offerings by the building materials industry in a sample of 238 companies. It was observed that only 36 of these companies offer BIM objects on their own websites, three of them offer plugins and 22 use the BIMobject® marketplace. Despite the importance of the building materials industry and the designers' preference for proprietary BIM objects, the industry in Brazil is still at an early stage of BIM methodology adoption. We also highlight the role of building materials companies to the successful of BIM adoption and the benefits that these companies can obtain from an effective participation in this digitalization process of the construction chain.
