Interoperability of parametric modeling tools in industrial plant designs

This study results from a master’s research that investigated data exchange
among different BIM tools used by a group of Belo Horizonte companies in the development
of industrial plant designs. The main sources of the exploratory research were unstructured
interviews and documentation analysis. We found that companies use 3D modeling mainly for
visualization and clash detection. Companies are focused on solving interoperability problems
due to the simultaneous use of BIM and industrial parametric modeling tools, a blend that
can induce the use of new technologies for the AEC field to the extent that more complex
designs are developed by this sector. The interoperability between the software occurs mainly
by direct links and proprietary standards, due to the lack of normative definitions, a fact that
requires harmonization initiatives between standards such as IFC, CIS/2 and ISO-15926. This
study shows that the design disciplines comprise a 3D integrated digital model. However,
the integrated model lacks enough parametric features for the whole building simulation.
For management modeling, companies adopt their own tool for creating parametric objects,
translation models between non-interoperable tools and bills of material management. This
study led to the compilation of the data exchange flow between software, specifying the used
extension, the design phases and the involved teams.
