MORPHOLOGICAL IDENTITY CHARACTERIZATION APPLIED ON ARCHITECTURAL SPACE OF AN EVOLUTIONARY HOUSING

This paper deals with morphological analysis of the architectural design of a housing which was produced for a horizontal condominium in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brazil. It refers to a work developed in the Multidisciplinary Housing Studies Group from Federal University of Mato Grosso. Assuming that flexibility and evolutionary capacity are among the factors that insert quality characteristics to housing, these possibilities depend entirely on the generated form in the conception phase. Considering that the geometrical configuration of the projected spaces enables conducing or not to a form which potentiates the evolutionary capacity, dynamism and longevity of the housing, this paper demonstrates, through the application of the shape grammar methodology, the decomposition of the architectural plan of housing. With this methodology, it was possible to identify the vocabulary of emerging forms of conception process, to identify the kind of flexibility proposed on the projects as a criterion of design quality and to detect the evolutionary potential of the housing. As a result of the analysis, it was observed that compliance with the design quality criteria is determined by the designer’s skill and vision to predict conditions that enable and foster the application of quality principles. Aspects such as the capacity of expanding the housing, seen through its evolutionary potential, and the possibility of continued evolution and flexibility of the house were observed in this study.
