Abstract

Applying design and the use of three-dimensional scanning in cultural heritage opens a new field for the preservation of cultural property. Given this context, a project with historical/educational purposes was created to perform three-dimensional scanning of facade elements of four historic buildings located in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil. The technique chosen was based on structured-light scanning. After a prior analysis of the elements, a brief historical survey for each building was done. As results, after the acquired data were processed, it was possible to compare the real models to the three-dimensional models. Technical data from the scans of each element were made available. Finally, a flowchart with all the steps followed during the process was made. Furthermore, the virtual models had their size reduced to be made available for online viewing.
