Abstract

The presence and contact with elements of nature has been widely defended by biophilic design enthusiasts in Health Assistance Establishments (HAE), the benefits which include improving the well-being and quality of life of healthcare workers and patient recovery, are of great relevance in the planning and design of these spaces. The aim of this study is to present the main strategies and benefits of applying biophilic design in HAEs. The adopted methodology was a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) followed by the analysis of the projects of the Sarah Network Hospitals, designed by the brazilian architect João Filgueiras Lima. The results showed that the presence of biophilic design elements in hospital environments, in addition to bringing beneficial effects to health workers, brought many benefits to patients and substantially helped their recovery. When analyzing the works of João Filgueiras Lima, several design decisions were noted to resemble the characteristics of biophilic design, such as strategies to provide thermal comfort, large spaces with solariums, gardens and humanized hospital environments, characteristics considered fundamental in biophilic care and considered valuable from an architectural point of view. The recognition of this topic in recent years, especially after the Coronavirus pandemic, shows the importance of health environment projects to re-establish the contact with nature that has been lost with urban lifestyle, as well as to understand new, more ecological ways of conscious building.
