Abstract

This paper describes a 5th year design studio in an Architecture and Urban Design undergraduate program which adopted a parametric and performance-based design strategy for the design of high-rise buildings. The studio included the use of environmental and structural analyses, as well as parametric and algorithmic modeling for incorporating the results of these analyses to the generation of form based on performance.  Besides, the studio included an intensive use of digital fabrication equipment for the production of scale models. The results show the importance of having an interdisciplinary team of instructors in the design studio, and the feasibility of reproducing, even if in a simplified manner, the integrated design process, with the use of CAD/CAE/CAM technologies, which is ever more present in architectural offices.
