Abstract

This paper presents an exploratory study on the design process in readjustment
construction works of university buildings in a public institution. The method of multiple
case studies was used. As evidence sources, the analysis of documents and projects, direct
observation of work routines and interviews with those involved in the design process are
highlighted. Three projects were studied, and the main problems and difficulties of the
design process are analyzed and compared to recent studies focusing on universities. The
results suggest that in addition to problems inherent to the hiring mechanisms of public
work projects, the universities have specific problems associated with frequent changes in
organizational structure, which implies changes in decision-making mechanisms, frequent
changes in the staff involved, strong involvement of customers in the design processes and
a project dynamic conditioned to obtaining financial resources. These factors hinder an
effective cooperation aimed at integrated solutions for the design and construction stages.
These results are similar to those found in other studies conducted recently.
