Abstract

The Museu de Geociências/IG, Universidade de Brasília is developing the Our Daily Mineral program for elementary level students. The program offers them the opportunity to understand the role of mineral substances in everyday human activities, through three Our Daily Mineral workshops: the House building, Transport vehicles, fuels and roads and Arts. In each workshop, students are asked about the materials that make and run houses, vehicles and works of art, their raw materials, and the sources of energy that make and change them. Using a variety of sources including magazines, books, maps and the sample labels in the Museum, students learn the distribution of mineral raw-materials in space and time. With a set of samples, students are involved in hands-on activities to describe and identify minerals and rocks that are raw-materials for construction, vehicles, fuels and works of arts. Activities include the basic skills of reading, listening, writing and drawing, and serve to motivate students to read and write on Natural Science and to learn from scientific knowledge. Thus, the Our Daily Mineral program, through a real and contextualized learning, can provide better formation to basic education students, developing their abilities and skills to understand natural materials, contributing to build a Reference Standard of the Physical World (matter, energy, space and time), valorising the scientific knowledge as a factor of development and well-being.
