Health professionals, including nurses, have to worry on a daily basis about how to access, select and use the best scientific evidence available, a complex task due to the exponential production of scientific information in the health field. This descriptive exploratory study with quantitative analysis identified barriers and facilitators to the use of scientific evidence by nursing professionals in the Midwest region of Brazil. A total of 115 nurses working in clinical practice at the time of the study took part. The information resources most used by the study participants were scientific articles, consultation with other health professionals and clinical guidelines. The top facilitators and barriers to the use of scientific information were continuing education and excessive workload, respectively. The conclusion is that the use of scientific evidence by nursing professionals requires the development of well-established organizational policies for the search and use of information associated with continuing training, adequate remuneration and a review of the workload of nursing professionals.
