Abstract

Historical study identifying the evolution of the Archival Science in the former Soviet Union, between the Bolshevik revolution in 1917 until 1985. Initially, the research will examine the development and establishment of the Archival Science in Russia, between the middle ages until the last years of the czarist regime. After that, it will be discussed the consolidation of the Russian Archives in the early decades of the USSR, analyzing the laws, congresses and courses established in the country in the 1920s, and the long period of closure and repression promoted by the leader Josef Stalin between the 1930s and 1940s. Finally it will be studied the period of the Archival restructuring in the country between the 1950s and 1980s, analyzing the initiatives of the Communist government to reorganize and institutionalize the Archival practices and documents collections in the USSR, and identifying the problems and dilemmas in which the Soviet Archival Science suffered in this period.
