Institutional Repositories at Brazilian Higher Education Institutions: current overview

The current scenario of globally distributed digital repositories stimulates diversified studies on these resources with which this work seeks to contribute, aiming a survey of repositories of higher education institutions in Brazil, verifying the effectiveness of an experimental tool in data treatment and analysis using as sources the Registry of Open Access Repositories (ROAR), Directory of Open Access Repositories (OpenDOAR), Diretório Luso-Brasileiro de Revistas e Repositórios de Acesso Aberto and the L_repositorios list. The experimental tool ‘Google Fusion Tables’ has been applied on data from institutional repositories to categorize its main features: sponsor institution, nature of the institution, location, geographic region, software and use of the Dublin Core format, and amount of work available on survey date. We identified 49 repositories which in August 2013 provided 396,881 items, being Federal institutions those with the largest repository population and LUME repository the first in volume of items; the Southeast region has the largest number of repositories and volume of items available; DSpace software is predominant with its 1.6.2 version and Dublin Core pattern in all its applications. This study has demonstrated the effectiveness and usefulness of ‘Fusion Tables’, allowing to characterize the current landscape of repositories of higher education institutions in Brazil. The results are available in a Repository Catalog and in an interactive Repository Map of Higher Education Institutions in Brazil.
